Gel and shellac polish is applied in thin layers and cured under a UV or LED lamp between coats, which is what gives it a harder, longer-wearing finish than air-dried polish. Application is quick work for an experienced technician and, done well, does not itself weaken the nail.
Removal is where the risk actually sits. Proper removal soaks the gel in remover, usually under foil or a clip, until it lifts off on its own rather than being scraped or filed away. Picking gel off at home, or a salon that files through it aggressively to save time, takes layers of the natural nail plate with it — that is the most common cause of the thin, peeling nails people end up attributing to the gel rather than to how it was taken off.
